Emergency on Saturday!

Council and Volunteers joined together on Saturday 21 September to test aspects of the Lanner Emergency Plan. Council funded six places for First Aid training and those that had received this training certainly got chance to put their skills to the test.

The session was led by Chris Prissell, a local resident with over 25 years experience as a Paramedic. As the injured were briefed on their ‘injuries’ and acting skills the First Aiders were briefed by Cllr Ross Marshall on what to expect.

There then followed a practical session to treat these injures which included cuts, burns, broken femur and suspected neck injury. After a debrief session Chris offered a demonstration of resuscitation techniques including the use of a defibrillator and all volunteers had a chance to practice.  Everyone then got chance to learn a little more about the importance and use of the ‘recovery position’.

A huge thank you to Chris Prissell, all the First Aiders and particularly all those that acted as casualties and assisted with demonstrations. Thanks also to Ann Shannon from Neighbourhood Watch who made sure everyone had a well deserved cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards!

Volunteer Fiona Brookes, a First Aider with considerable medical experience commented:
“We all learnt something. The casualties were superb, and I hope enjoyed the experience. The ‘Emergency Rucksack’, provided by the Parish Council, is all packed and ready should the need for help ever arise. Please forward thanks to all involved with organising this event.”

Plans are now underway to work further with volunteers to improve the planning document and communication tree and to consider ways to recruit more volunteers ready to help in an emergency.

Cllr Marshall, extended his gratitude to all those who participated and gave freely of their time and skills. Ross commented,  “This has certainly built on our action so far and with such commitment we can continue to build secure local resilience to help our community if we are faced with unexpected difficulties.”
